All the 24 models incorporate traditional materials to include, all manner of metals, woods, leathers, glass and other materials. These models have never before been offered for sale and include 18 Mercedes cars, Opel, Fiat, BMW, Edford, DKW, Renault and Hanomag.
“My father began building wood car models at about the age of 15. His first completely
scratch built model was the Fiat 1500 carved from solid wood. He loved cars from
childhood, and always found imperfections in his toys, and as he grew older he began
to modify and detail models and toys that were commonly available. For more than 60
years he constructed a collection of models with the help of the documentation he
received directly from Mercedes-Benz (original blueprints) and several other sources all
over the world. He had a desire to be as faithful to the real cars as possible, many years
ago he wrote to Mercedes-Benz explaining that he loved the maker and needed
research and reference materials. Someone at Mercedes was delighted by this, and
kindly supplied him with factory drawings, brochures and photos. My father was not a
collector of blueprints or catalogs, they were just tools for his work. Some of them are
well used and sometimes drawn upon.
He had a real passion for German cars, specifically Mercedes-Benz. He drove a BMW,
so that is one of the reasons he chose to make the BMW 327 model.
My father was the owner of three schools, here in Lisbon for about 35 years, and he
was also professor in one of them. Model making was always his hobby, therefore cars
that were chosen to make were only what he wanted to build, but he did accept just a
few private commissions.
Since the model making was just a hobby, he only thought of selling his cars in last two
years of his life. You can’t compare his work to one of those new professional builders
with special cnc and other modern tools and technology. Everything in his models is
handmade, just with hand tools: almost no electrical tools were used at all. The models
are mainly made of wood, with very many brass and leather pieces too. His models are
unique and beautiful objects of art.” The son of Alberto de Oliveira.
